Musings of a Demented Mind

I tend to look at life a little differently than most... almost like I was looking through a kaleidoscope that's a bit more fractured...

  • It ain’t easy…

I have the kiddos with me at my parents and it is a bit stressful. I grew up at a lake in the poconos of PA (which was great in the summer, but sucked in the winter). The kiddos love the water but she can barely swim and he can’t take swimming lessons until he is potty trained.

I get stressed because I.can’t trust my family enough to watch my kids like I would, so I have to be hyper vigilant. The reason being is because not only do I have to watch my kids, I have to be aware of where my parent’s hyper 75 lbs dog is AND what crazy crap my sisters’ older kids are trying to pull.

    Yay long holiday “relaxing” weekends.

  • Commuting is hell

For those of you that care, I work in New York but live near Philly… which makes for one hell of a commute.  It means I have to leave extra early to get to work on time and that I get home late.  The pay is good and I love my job… but I HATE my commute.

Seriously, I loathe the fucking commute.  The fact that at least 4 hours of my day is taken up by my commute is clearly nearly not mind bogglingly enough, but I have to pay a shit load of money to do it.  With just my train ticket and parking it costs me anywhere from $565 -$750 a month to commute into NYC.  That isn’t even including gas.

I love the train… or at least I love the concept of the train.  You get on and have nice leisurely ride into the city.  If you’re lucky and catch the express train, you get into the city rather quickly.  If not, you’re on the train from hell making EVERY stop from your stop all the way to the last stop.  Then there are days like today…when every thing goes wrong… and there is nothing you can do about it.  They canceled 4 trains… and never let the passengers waiting on the platform know… and when one train did pull up they said that it was the express then it was changed to a local and that the express was right behind it… which it wasn’t.  Then the next train was taken off of the board… again, no announcement. So I jumped on the next train which was a local… so by the time I finally get on the train I’ve already been waiting for it for over an hour… like everyone else.  Luckily I get a seat… because I’m going to need it for the next 4 hours it takes me to get into the city.  Now this wouldn’t have been too bad, except for the fact that there was only 1 bathroom on the train… in the last car… and it was broken.

I feel bad for the conductors because they are on the front line having to deal with the pissed off customers. Meanwhile the executive board of NJ Transit gets to ride in nice town cars, at the expense of the tax payer, to their offices.   Isn’t that convenient… oh, yeah, did I mention that the great Governor of NJ, Chris Christie, just canceled 2 new tunnels, 2 tracks in and 2 tracks out, that had just started to be built… they were to replace the single tracks in and out that have been in use for over 100 years.  How this all works is mind numbing to me, because yes it would have cost NJ a lot of money, but it would have added money to the local infrastructure.

As a commuter, I feel like we are treated lower than scum by these people, but much like a drug addict needs his drug, I need mass transit… and they are my dealers.

  • This is an all time classic.  It is scary how true this still is today… and this is almost 20 years old.
